About The Creative Center of Scottsdale

A co-working community for artists

The Creative Center of Scottsdale is a co-working community for artists from sculptors to painters, photographers to graphic designers and mixed-media artists as well as businesses and organizations that serve the arts community. Based in Old Town Scottsdale’s historic arts district, our collaborative environment works similar to an incubator–a collection of creative minds exchanging ideas and insights with one another in a common space.

The Creative Center of Scottsdale is the answer for those who are looking to escape the home office, the kitchen table, or the unpredictable realm of public spaces. With our artist-friendly environment and beautiful studio spaces designed to showcase your work, we aim to be a haven for those who work and create in the creative field.

Our mission

The mission of The Creative Center of Scottsdale is to use collaborative coworking as a tool to build the Scottsdale-area art scene into a thriving hub of opportunity. The Creative Center of Scottsdale is currently under construction with a tentative launch date of Fall 2013.

History

A brief history of the building

The Creative Center of Scottsdale is housed an iconic Scottsdale landmark, Mandall’s Shooting-Supplies store. The facility has an underground shooting gallery, a novel attraction for the city during the store’s heyday. The iconic sign with a teddy bear holding a machine gun still greets passers-by and will be maintained as a part of the center. The rest of the building housed Arizona Knitting and Needlepoint and an auto garage.

Martin Mandall opened his shooting-supplies store at the location of The Creative Center of Scottsdale in the mid-1980s. Mandall Shooting Supplies, Inc. was one of major firearm importers of well-known lines such as Sig Sauer, Hammerli, Krico, Sako. The store had everything for the gun enthusiast beyond firearms and ammo. It included a machine shop for Class III, suppressor manufacturing, and basement with several tunnels about 5′ in diameter and 50′ long that served as shooting range. This was used for test firing the Class III and suppressors that Mandall’s built on site.

Green Initiatives

Reducing Energy Consumption

The Creative Center of Scottsdale proudly participates in the city of Scottsdale’s green building construction code which encourages a whole-systems approach through design and building techniques to minimize environmental impact and reduce the energy consumption of buildings while contributing to the health of its occupants.

Adaptive Reuse & Going Local Preserve our Future

One of the most sustainable things we can do is to preserve what we already have. The Creative Center of Scottsdale will transform the existing structure into a community-based business committed to artistic expression and innovation. The existing concrete block walls, wood floors, and wood roof structures will remain intact and exposed, revealing the history of the building while also looking toward a vibrant and sustainable future.

The Creative Center of Scottsdale is dedicated to supporting local businesses. All fixtures and materials were selected looking at the proximity of their creation to home. The interior insulation is made from blue jeans and produced right here in Chandler! All the bathroom fixtures are ‘Made in the USA’ and within 500 miles of Phoenix. The interior walls will be made from wood collected from forests certified to forest sustainably. This means that for every tree they cut down for construction use, they will replace it with a new tree.
